How Many Eyes Do Spiders Have
Most spiders have eight eyes, but some species have six, four, two, or even no eyes. Even within a single species, the number of eyes may vary, but its always an even number. Key Takeaways About 99% of spiders have eight eyes. Some have six, four, or two. A few species have vestigial eyes or none at all.Spiders have two types of eyes. The large pair of primary eyes forms images. The secondary eyes help the spider track movement and gauge distance. The number and arrangement of spider eyes helps an arachnologist identify the spiders species. Why Spiders Have So Many Eyes A spider needs so many eyes because it cannot twist its cephalothorax (head) to see. Rather, the eyes are fixed in place. In order to hunt and evade predators, spiders need to be able to sense movement all around them. By having eyes spaced around its head, this spider gain an excellent range of vision. Mohd Faridz Azhar / EyeEm / Getty Images Types of Spider Eyes The two main types of eyes are the forward-facing primary eyes called ocelli and the secondary eyes. In other arthropods, the ocelli only detect light direction, but in spiders these eyes form true images. The principal eyes contain muscles that move the retina to focus and track an image. Most spiders have poor visual acuity, but ocelli in jumping spiders exceeds that of dragonflies (insects with the best vision) and approaches that of humans. Due to their placement, the ocelli are also known as antero-media eyes or AME. The secondary eyes are derived from compound eyes, but they dont have facets. They are usually smaller than the primary eyes. These eyes lack muscles and are completely immobile. Most secondary eyes are round, but some are oval or semilunar in shape. The eyes are identified based on placement. The antero-lateral eyes (ALE) are the top row of eyes on the side of the head. The postero-lateral eyes (PLE) are the second row of eyes on the side of the head. The postero-median eyes (PME) are in the middle of the head. Secondary eyes may face forward, or be on the sides, top, or back of the spiders head. The secondary eyes serve a variety of functions. In some cases, the lateral eyes expand the range of the primary eyes, giving the arachnid a wide angle image. The secondary eyes act as motion detectors and provide depth perception information, helping the spider locate the distance as well as direction of prey or threats. In nocturnal species, the eyes have a tapetum lucidum, which reflects light and helps the spider see in dim light. Spiders with a tapetum lucidum show eye-shine when illuminated at night. In some species, all eight eyes are located in front. I love nature / Getty Images Using Spider Eyes for Identification Arachnologists use spider eyes to help classify and identify spiders. Because 99% of spiders have eight eyes and the number of eyes can vary even within members of one species, the arrangement and shape of eyes is often more helpful than the number. Even then, the details of the spiders legs and spinnerets are more useful for identification. Eight Eyes: The day-active jumping spiders (Salticidae), flower spiders (Thomisidae), orb weavers (Araneidae), cobweb weavers (Theridiidae), and wolf spiders (Lycosidae) are common spiders with eight eyes.Six Eyes: Several spider families have species with six eyes. These include the recluse spiders (Sicariidae), the spitting spiders (Scytodidae), and some of the cellar spiders (Pholcidae).Four Eyes: Spiders belonging to the family Symphytognathidae and some spiders in the Nesticidae family have four eyes. Two Eyes: Only spiders belonging to the family Caponiidae have two eyes.Vestigial or No Eyes: Species that live exclusively in caves or underground may lose their sight. These spiders typically belong to families that have six or eight eyes in other habitats. Sources Barth, Friedrich G. (2013). A Spiders World: Senses and Behavior. Springer Science Business Media. Stem Cell Research Essay - 940 Words
We all started off as an embryo. At one point in time, we were a small bundle of cells that would one day become who we are today. Those cells were essential to our body and the development of the fetuses that were us. Put yourself in the place of an embryo. You are a small blastocyst or a bunch of cell, only about 0.1 millimeters big. Even though you are slight and may seem insignificant, you hold all the opportunities of life. You have a soul and are alive, because you will become a human. The possibilities are endless; you could be a surfer, an artist, a chef, or anything else you wish. Now, imagine being taken out of the womb and you are killed. Then, experiments are conducted on you. All the potentials are now gone, and in their placeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Some people however, argue that stem-cell research is unethical. The debate on stem cell research being ethical is still ongoing. Arguments are made supporting both sides of the debate, and many claim that embryos have a moral status. The embryos are a potential human life and they should be treated with as much respect as anyone. They have a chance of becoming like any one of us, and that is taken away from them when they are experimented on. ââ¬Å"A human embryo is a human being in the embryonic stage, just as an infant is a human being in the infant stageâ⬠(Hug 2). They are still alive and have souls just like the rest of us. Embryos are what we all have started off as, and we were given a chance to live. We canââ¬â¢t pinpoint when a human life begins and so we should give a moral status to all humans no matter what stage of life they are in. Not only are we snatching away the moral status of these embryos, but we are doing so for someone elseââ¬â¢s benefit. The experiments of stem-cell research are done on dead fetuses, so we are basically swapping one death for another. The research that is conducted on these dead fetuses is to help find cures for people who are dying with disea ses. The research conducted is giving up one live to help another person. We should not be experimenting on a dead life to help someone else. There have been other experiments in history that have been done to find cures for diseases, but thatShow MoreRelatedStem Cell Research : Stem Cells1338 Words à |à 6 Pages Stem Cells Stem cells are cells that are found throughout the human body. Boyhood Movie Sound and Imagery Essay Example For Students
Boyhood Movie Sound and Imagery Essay Boyhood, is a unique movie. At first it does not seem like such an original plot. However, what makes it so unique is that it was filmed over the span of 12 years, with the same cast. Directed by Richard Linklater, Boyhood, is about a 6 year old boy named Mason, growing up and coming of age with his family. The audience has the chance to see Mason grow up to age 18. In the years in between, the audience has the chance to experience the good, the bad, and the heartbreak through Masons eyes. The patience of the director isnt the only impressive part; the cinematography and sound equally contribute to the effect of the film. People say sound and acting is what makes a movie, and sound is especially important in this movie. While Mason is younger, more hard rock and playful songs play to attribute to his youth. For example, 2 minutes into the film, Mason goes out to graffiti an underpass with his friend. As theyre riding out to the overpass, hard rock plays to accompany the nostalgic feeling of being a rambunctious child doing mischievous things. The music played in any movie, tries to give the audience the feeling of being in a similar situation. Another example is when Mason, his mother, and sister move to Houston, Texas. Were shown them driving in the car with all of their belongings as the sun goes down, and Mason and his sister squabble over space. At that moment Sheryl Crows song, Soak Up The Sun, plays, and could potentially tell the viewers that things will get better for their move. If any other song were playing, it might make it seem like their mother had a terrible agenda for the family. Background music is a conveyer of feelings, but unfiltered sung music counts too. As Mason grew older, a scene with his family singing together on the porch, has an impact. The summer night gives a feeling of being together, with the people you love, and just being able to spend relaxed time with them. Boyhood, isnt a silent film, and music is not the only sound. The voices and tones of the characters translates a lot to the audience as well. The characters emotional responses tell the viewers how to feel. Without the emotions of the cast, audiences wouldnt be able to deduce that the first stepfather is an overly controlling man. The tones of his voice are condescending and rude to Masons mom. Later, we find that he is an alcoholic, and physically abusive. One day, when Mason comes home, he find his mom on the garage floor. His mother sounds panicked, and tells him that shes okay, but he should go inside. Later, during dinner, the stepfather becomes destructive and chucks cups at his kids. The viewers would have no idea whats going on without the dialogue. Viewers would most likely think that she fell as she said. In Boyhood, there are many scenes with spoken language and music, but there were also many with just ambient noise with actions on screen. In such a dramatic movie, there are many silent scenes used to break news, or to become the central focus of a dramatic scene. For instance, an older Mason is driving with his biological father to the grandparents house, to celebrate Masons 15th birthday. His father speaks of the old car he owned, and eventually sold. Mason becomes upset and both become silent, since his father had promised that car to him when he was younger. Silences can be used as a transitional effect as well. As they pulled up to Masons grandparents cabin, the camera shows the elderly couple with their dog, smiling and waving happily. There is no sound at all. This scene emphasizes the visual effects of what the audience is seeing. Boyhood, is a movie that is full of small impressions made by sound and visual effects. Through this films sound and visuals, it allows audiences to get feel the emotions that the characters are experiencing.
Portfolio for Improving Skill Development - MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about thePortfolio for Improving Skill Development. Answer: Critical Thinking Critical Thinking is the aptitude to examine how you reason and produce proof of your concepts, rather than merely recognizing your individual rationalizing as adequate evidence. You can acquire several profits from understanding critical thinking abilities, such as more command of your education and compassion for other perspectives (Browne, Freeman,2000). It is simply the use of rational reason deficient predilections towards certain results. It necessitates an aim, fair evaluation of information and data and the verbalization of a conclusion based solidly on that assessment. It requires an eagerness and capability to "reason outside the box." Additionally, it is a higher-order reasoning skill that is essential to learners, preparing them to react to a selection of complicated difficulties that are sure to occur in their professional and personal lives(Fu,2013). The cognitive abilities at the basis of critical thinking are analysis, interpretation, assessment, clarification, deduc tion, and self- control. Critical Thinking is, in brief, self- guided, self- restricted, self- scrutinized, and self- educative thinking. It presumes agreement to severe criteria of brilliance and wary expertise of their usage. It involves effectual interaction and problem resolving skills and a pledge to conquer our natural sociocentrism and egocentrism (Harlen,Crick,Black,Broadfoot, Daugherty, Gardner, Wiliam,2003). Some examples of critical thinking that is applied in ICT include the following first, an ICT expert correctly and confidently enlightening exactly to his or her colleagues the procedure used to reach a particular deduction on an ICT problem like when there is a breach in a companys network (McMahon,2009). Also why and how a specific approach or standard of evidence was utilized when they were solving this particular violation and if it was effective, hence this will help the expert and peers to have a basis when they are solving similar problems in future (Ng'ambi, Johnston,2006). The next example is, when developing software to be used in any field, ICT experts should always think ahead of any problems that may arise and solutions of these problems. Also, they should develop ones that solve problems that face the field of specialty and help everyone and not just a few. Hence they should evaluate a problem and provide a solution (Rumpagaporn,2007). SWOT Analysis of my Academic Writing Skills. For this task, I will be assessing my academic writing skills and pinpointing my strengths and weaknesses using a SWOT evaluation method. Once these matters have been recognized any insufficiencies will be tackled using coming up with strategies to solve them (Jackson, Joshi, Erhardt,2003). Strengths Weaknesses Punctuality Possess excellent researching skills Good at reading and writing Have excellent IT skills Motivation Procrastination Time management concentration Opportunities Threats Help from peers Chances for personal growth Job shadowing Involve tutors in providing comments Slow internet speeds can affect my research skills for assignments Power outages can affect the time set to do the assignments Strategies to address time management weakness. First I would create a chance to do special jobs for a given interval of time, this will help me develop an action plan (Kim,2005). It will aid me in identifying the most important task and then set a deadline for when it is to be completed; it should be done on a regular basis (Dyson, 2004). The next strategy is once you have set what you want to do, you should schedule your time so as to remain focused and on track with the assignments given. Hence if you efficiently plan your time, you will be able to use your time well (Yksel, Dagdeviren,2007). Reflective Writing I received feedback for my assignment, and it was not good. I had waited for the response on the task for quite long as I had done the assignment fully and expected full marks for it. I was waiting for an email from my lecturer early so that I could see if my skills in handling the task I was assigned were on point (Boud, Keogh, Walker, 1996). The professor sent feedback with comments that I had some grammatical errors in the assignments and also that some of my answers to the questions were out of the concept. He also mentioned that I needed to add more information on the job I was given as I was a little vague on it and thus needed to explain myself further (Pavlovich, Collins, Jones, 2009). I contributed to getting this feedback by not researching in depth on the topic of the assignment that I was given and thus when I tackled the question I could not go into depth on it, hence my answer appeared to be vague (Bolton,2010). Also as I did not understand some of the assignment quest ions, I was out of concept in solving it in some parts. I also did not thoroughly proofread the assignment on completion hence there were some errors in the grammar in the replies. On the other hand, I handled the question as best I could, and other than the few grammatical errors I had, the paper was perfectly no other errors. Also in the journal on the questions, I handled well I proved my research skills were on point as I handled them well. I answered the lecturer and thanked him for his feedback and asked for further assistance (Falchikov,1996). From this experience, I learned that I should always understand the question and research deeply on any topic I have been given to tackle. I should ensure that when I handle matters and that when I research on the question it is the right one and that I have grasped the concept completely, thus I will be able to remain on topic and avoid being vague with my answers. Also, I should make sure that once I complete answering the assignment, I have been given that I go through it with a fine-tooth comb to correct any errors present (Lai, Calandra,2007). I would have asked the lecturer to clarify the question clearly when he gave it out when I did not understand thus I would have answered it well also I should have gone through the paper to correct all the errors it had. From this situation I learned a lot on how I should handle my future assignments hence It gave me the opportunity to improve my skills and better them. The negative from this situation is that I learned that I lack compreh ension skills on jobs and that I am afraid of asking clarification, I should also improve my skills for attention to details (Hammersley?Fletcher, Orsmond,2005). Responding to an Ethical Scenario In this situation, I would go and talk with my friend and indirectly find out about the situation. I would ask about her wellbeing and that of her familys. When she opens up about her husbands health status, I would ask her to clarify it further, on the details of his terminal illness if she is comfortable sharing that sort of information with me. Once she tells me everything about the situation and how long her husband has been given, I would then assess the situation with the new information I have learned. With the conclusion, I would then talk to her and present my views on the part where she wants to take the loan. I would tell her of my fears on her taking the credit and ensure that she knows all the consequences that may arise when her husband passes on. I would guarantee that I would go into depth with her discussing the situation from all sides and ensuring that she is content and can make her decision with a clear head. This intervention would be done outside office hours. I would do this because as she is my friend, I would always feel guilty when she gets stressed in future because she made the decision. I would feel guilty since I knew about the situation, even though through the wrong means, and did nothing about it. I would tell her that I learned about it when I went through the information of workers in the company and was worried about her, even if she gets angry with me. In the ACS Code of Ethics, the value that is represented by this dilemma is one on honesty. Here I would truthfully inform my peer that I accessed her information while doing my job and as a friend, I wanted to help her out. Hence this will ensure that I represent my knowledge of the situation correctly (Van den Bergh, Deschoolmeester,2010). Also, the enhancement of quality of life is another value that is applicable here, whereas she is working with me I would ensure that she has the best life possible and that if its a solvable problem I offer my help (Zigon, 2007). It is important for an ICT professional to be ethical as they are expected to be professional as the carry out the tasks they are given. Also so that they are considerate of their actions and how it impacts their clients, workers, and other people (Valentine, Barnett, 2007). Also as more people are utilizing ICT in their daily lives, they will be subject to more scrutiny from everyone hence should act as professionally as possible based on principles from their professional code of conduct (Sonenshein,2007). Successful Completion Justification Interpersonal, Verbal and Listening Skills During group work where we had to handle a given assignment, we were paired off to deal with different tasks. With my partner, I listened to any contributions he had to make on the questions and made comments on this. I also gave my point of view after hearing his. Hence we were able to solve the task we were assigned with ease (Kenning,2007). Reading Skills I used my reading skills in different ways to complete my academic assignment. I did this by deeply and keenly reading the articles that were provided for this unit of study and ensuring that I comprehended all the points mentioned in the article. I also utilized it by researching the topic further and making sure that I got all the information necessary that would answer the question well (Coiro,2011). Team Work When as a group we were given the assignment to do, we chose a group leader who gave out tasks to the members to complete the job. Afterward, we met up with the group and consolidated our ideas and ensured that everyone answered the questions well. We utilized communication skills, interpersonal skills, and reading skills (Parmelee, Michaelsen,2010). Ethical Issues One example is where a network administrator had to decide on whether or not to monitor the workers at his office as he was asked to by his boss even if the employees had not signed a contract to that effect. He came to the decision to inform his boss of his worries (Al-Saggaf, Burmeister,2012). Also, another example is where an ICT head had to find a company to supply them with ICT hardware and one of the company offering is a friends company. He made the decision based on his companys best interest. With these two examples, I understood that as people we are faced with trouble, and we should critically think about problems before we come to a decision as it affects peoples lives. Also that we should always consider all implications of our decision if they are also legally, ethically and socially accepted (Bynum,2008). Diversity I learned how to work with people in a diverse work environment and staff by learning about everyone and their cultures. It helped me to appreciate people more and also to be able to respect everyone and avoid any friction. An example is that I learned about the prayer patterns of my colleagues and appreciated the time that was allocated to that(Phelps,Graham, Watts,2011). Evaluation I learned how to evaluate ICT technologies importance in organizations by carrying out research on its use in different businesses and comparing the results. An example of how it is when I observed in several companies that the used technology like mobile phones and laptops to complete tasks hence increasing productivity and efficiency of the business (Mohamed, Murray, Mohamed,2010). Communication and Collaborative Technologies Conferencing is an example where people in a company can hold a meeting from anywhere and at any time with ease. Another one is coordination software where it used to assign tasks that when solved well will amount in achieving the goal of the company. It was beneficial as it improved communication and reduced costs incurred in traveling and also saved on time for people (Blanger, Allport,2008). Feedback I liked this unit as I was able to improve a lot of my skills like my interpersonal, reading communication and listening skills. I also learned how to work in teams and learned about the importance of diversity in the workplace. All these contributed to making a better ICT professional in future. I would suggest that you add more class time as I felt that it is beneficial in improving someones life we should be taught more in this topic. Also, I would like that we could have had a practical class where we observed all the things we learned in action in an office setting. References Al-Saggaf, Y., Burmeister, O. K. (2012). Research Proposal on Unilever Essay Example
Research Proposal on Unilever Essay Unilever is the Anglo-Dutch company which is called one of the leaders in the production of the consumer goods, foods products, cleaning agents, perfumes, etc. The company is headquartered in London and Rotterdam. Unilever was founded in 1930 after the union of the two companies: the Dutch producer of margarine ââ¬Å"Margarine Unieâ⬠and the prominent British company which specialized in the manufacturing of soap ââ¬Å"Lever Brothersâ⬠. The logic of the union of these two different companies is quite simple, because both companies imported the same product for the production of their goods ââ¬â the palm oil, which was imported from the foreign plantations. Both firms decided to save money on the transportation and purchase of the oil and bought it in the high quantities reducing expenditures and increasing profit. Unilever has a long history of success and its strategy is supposed to be quite wise because it purchased the rival companies on the market and gradually became the leader in the production of the consumer goods, though in 2000 the union of ââ¬Å"Procter Gambleâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Gilletteâ⬠left the company on the second place. Unilever is a successful company which owns such well-known brands which are recognized all over the world as the perfume Calvin Klein, soap Dove, the products of personal care like Timotei, Axe, Rexona, Domestos, Sunsilk, etc. Nearly 44% of the companyââ¬â¢s sales are organized in the developing countries and Unilever satisfies 2/3 of the personal care product demands in these parts of the world. The personnel of Unilever is about 174 thousand employees.
